Doctoral Meeting: 'Behind the Words: Lexical Ambiguity Across Language Models'
Beyond their surface forms, words act as linguistic chameleons. Lexical ambiguity, in which terms like ‘habit’ can pivot between monastic dress and behavioural patterns, poses a persistent challenge for linguistic technologies. Despite recent advances in language modelling, resolving these semantic differences remains a significant obstacle for automatic and unsupervised approaches.
This presentation will explore language models' capacity to handle these semantic nuances, examining their ability to disambiguate meaning in both monolingual and cross-lingual contexts.
